A short list made a few weeks before school starts saves a lot of last minute running around. Whether your child is starting playschool, preschool or kindergarten, the basics are the same: clothes, a bag, something to eat from, something to drink from and a few supplies. Check the school's own list first, since many schools specify uniforms, bag sizes or particular notebooks.
Six back to school essentials for little ones

1. School clothes
Whether or not the school has a uniform, keep a few comfortable outfits ready that your child can manage on their own, with easy waistbands and simple fastenings. For playschool, pack a spare set in the bag for spills and toilet accidents. Label everything with your child's name; identical uniforms and jumpers get mixed up quickly. Our kids' casual wear covers everyday clothes for non uniform days.

2. A backpack your child can carry
Pick a bag sized for your child, not one to grow into. It should hold a lunch box, a bottle, a folder and a change of clothes, with a zip your child can open. Name tags on the outside help teachers at pickup time.
3. A spoon and fork for the lunch box
Little ones who are still learning to feed themselves manage better with short handled, child sized cutlery they are used to at home. Send the same set they practise with, in a small case so it stays clean.
4. Stationery
Pencils, an eraser, a sharpener, crayons and the notebooks on the school list. Younger children often do better with thick crayons and chunky pencils that are easier to grip. Keep a small stock at home too, so homework does not stall when something goes missing.

5. A lunch box
Look for one your child can open alone, that seals well, and that you can wash easily every evening. Compartments help if your child does not like foods touching. Let them practise opening it at home before the first day.

6. A water bottle
A leak proof bottle with a spout or straw your child can use without help is the one that actually gets used. Check that it fits the side pocket of the bag, and pick a design they like so it comes home at the end of the day.
A few more things that help
- A labelled folder for notes from the teacher.
- A small hand towel or handkerchief.
- An umbrella or raincoat if school starts in the monsoon.
- A practice run of the morning routine a few days before, so the first day feels familiar.
Frequently asked questions
What are the basic needs for school children?
Comfortable clothes (or the uniform), a backpack they can carry, a lunch box, a water bottle and the stationery on the school's list. For younger children, add a spare change of clothes.
When should I start back to school shopping?
Two to three weeks before term begins gives you time to get the school list, label everything and let your child try out the bag, lunch box and bottle at home.
Why is a back to school checklist useful?
Writing everything down in one place makes it easier to shop in one go and to see what you already have, so nothing is forgotten on the first morning.
