It is Diwali evening, the house is full, the diyas are lit along the balcony ledge, and you have been put in charge of the baby's outfit. Here is how to get it right.
For a baby's first Diwali, the best newborn baby clothes are soft cotton pieces with snap or zip closures, nothing scratchy or metallic near the face, and a light extra layer for the evening. A cotton jabla or romper in a festive colour does the job, with one short photo outfit and a spare set kept close.
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November this year, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday 11 November. That leaves about three weeks to plan, and the baby's side of the planning often lands with dads. This guide is written for you, and for every family member who will be holding the baby that night.
The short version: start with fabric and closures, then match colours with mom, then plan the evening. Everything in this post comes from our newborn baby clothes collection, and we say plainly where our range has gaps.

What Should a Newborn Wear for Baby's First Diwali?
A newborn should wear breathable cotton next to the skin, closures that open quickly for diaper changes, and no sequins, beads, mirror work or stiff zari around the neck. Heavier, dressier pieces are fine for a fifteen minute photo session. For the puja and the hours of visitors after it, comfort wins.
A baby cannot tell you an outfit itches. They tell you by crying through the aarti. Most festive baby clothing in markets is designed to look good on a hanger, so the checks below matter more than the print.
How to Choose Newborn Baby Clothes That Are Safe for Diwali
Five rules cover nearly every festive purchase. Keep them on your phone when you shop, because festive displays make it easy to forget them.
Cotton against the skin. If the outer piece is dressy, there should still be a cotton layer underneath. Cotton breathes in a warm, crowded room.
Nothing hard near the face. Sequins, beads, mirrors and metal buttons can scratch, and anything that comes loose is a choking risk.
Snaps or zips, not long ties. Ties near the neck can loosen, tangle or get tugged. If a piece has ties, keep them short, knotted and away from the neck.
Easy diaper access. If a diaper change means taking the whole outfit off, you will do it several times before dinner.
Wash before wearing. A gentle wash softens new fabric and removes any finishing residue.
A jabla style romper ticks all five. It looks traditional enough for the elders and works like a regular romper for parents. You will find the full range in our cotton jablas for newborns.

Mom's pick
Jungle Elephant Infant Romper (Jabla Style)
100% cotton, snap buttons throughout including the crotch, preemie to 12 months. Rs. 699. View product
One honest note: some of our newer jabla rompers, such as the Color Rush and Under the Sea prints, use snaps plus a side tie. The tie sits at the waist rather than the neck, but if you want no ties at all, choose the snap only styles like Jungle Elephant, Puppy in the Garden or Turtle Trouble.
How Can Mom and Baby Twin Without Matching Fabric?
Match the colour, not the material. Mom can wear silk, brocade or an embroidered kurta while the baby wears cotton in the same colour family. In photos, colour reads as twinning far more than fabric does, and the baby stays comfortable all evening.
For dads, this is also the easiest way to join in. A kurta or stole in the same shade makes it a family look without anyone squeezing into an identical print.
| Twinning idea | Mom wears | Baby wears | Works best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same colour family | Kurta set in one strong colour | Cotton jabla or romper in a close shade | Lakshmi Puja and long evenings |
| Print to plain | Plain outfit in the main colour of the baby's print | Printed cotton romper | Daytime visits, Bhai Dooj lunch |
| White and gold | Off white or cream with gold detail | White cotton jhabla set, gold only on the adults | Family portraits |
| Blue family | Blue kurta or saree | Blue block print kurta set, for the puja only | Puja and group photos |
| Accent only | Any festive outfit with a dupatta | Any soft outfit plus a muslin in the dupatta colour | Babies who change outfits often |
What we do not stock right now: a matching mom and newborn ethnic set. Our ready made twinning combos are sized for older children, and they are currently sold out. Colour matching is the practical route this year. For mom's half of the look, especially if she is feeding, our guide to Diwali outfits for breastfeeding moms covers kurtas and dresses with nursing access. For whole family ideas, see our family twinning outfits for Indian festivals, most of which carry over to Diwali.

Aster Blue Block Print Jacket and Kurta Pajama Set
100% cotton jacket, kurta and drawstring pyjama, from 0 to 6 months. Rs. 1,299. View product
This set is the most festive piece in our infant range, and it is all cotton. The pyjama has a drawstring waist, so tie it snug, tuck the ends in, and treat it as a puja and photo outfit rather than something to sleep in. Stock in the smallest sizes is limited, so check your size early.
Which Outfit Works for Each Part of Diwali Day?
Instead of one outfit for the whole day, plan three: one for the puja, one for photos, and one for the evening. This table compares the pieces in our range that suit each moment.
| Piece | Fabric | Closure | Best moment | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jabla style infant romper | 100% cotton | Snap buttons, some styles add a side tie | Puja and visitors | Rs. 699 |
| Bhaakur jhabla and shirt set | GOTS certified cotton voile | Check the product photos | Daytime and warm rooms | Rs. 1,100 |
| Block print jacket and kurta pyjama set | 100% cotton | Drawstring pyjama | Photos and the puja | Rs. 1,299 |
| Full sleeve zipper romper | 100% cotton | Two way zip, built in footies | Evening and sleep | Rs. 699 |
Prices are what our site shows at the time of writing.
The Bhaakur voile sets are very light and come in white, blue and brown in the 0 to 3 month size, which makes them easy to colour match. They are non returnable, so read the size chart before you order.
How Should You Layer a Baby for a Diwali Evening?
Early November evenings in much of North India are noticeably cooler than the afternoons, and a balcony after sunset can feel chilly to a small baby. Layer rather than switching to one thick outfit: a light cotton jabla underneath, a full sleeve romper over it, and a muslin to wrap the baby in outdoors.
To check whether the baby is too warm, The Lullaby Trust suggests you feel the baby's chest or the back of the neck, and notes that cooler hands and feet are normal. Hot or sweaty skin means a layer should come off. If anything worries you, ask your paediatrician.
For the full sleeve layer, our Elephantastic Infant Zipper Romper is one example: 100% cotton with a two way zip for diaper changes. Built in footies solve the lost sock problem, which matters on a night when the baby is passed from lap to lap.
How Do You Keep a Baby Safe Around Diyas and Crackers?
This is the part of the evening where it is worth being the strict one in the family.
Diyas: keep the baby well away from lit diyas and candles. Agree in advance that nobody holds the baby while carrying a flame or the puja thali. Take turns: one adult lights the diyas while the other stays indoors with the baby.
Loose fabric: tuck away dupattas, swaddles and muslins before anyone holding the baby goes near a lamp.
Fabric choice: synthetics such as nylon and polyester net can melt onto skin if they catch a flame. Cotton is the sensible choice for anything a baby wears during a festival of open flames.
Crackers: loud bursts can startle and upset a small baby. Keep the baby indoors with windows and doors closed during the loudest hours, and a fan or soft background sound can help. Smoke is another reason to stay inside.
For jewellery, kajal, heavy accessories and other festive questions, our dos and don'ts for dressing your newborn for festive celebrations has the full checklist, so we will not repeat it here.
How to Get Good Diwali Photos of a Newborn
If you are the family photographer, take the photos early. By the time the puja is over and the sweets are out, most babies have had enough of being held.
Use the last daylight. Around sunset, soft light near a window or balcony door is warm and flattering, and you will not need a flash.
Switch the flash off. A bright flash makes many babies startle and squeeze their eyes shut.
Photo outfit on last, off first. Put the dressy piece on for fifteen minutes, take the pictures, then change back.
Diyas behind, not in front. Lamps in the background look better slightly out of focus, and the baby stays at a safe distance.
What Is a Good Spare Outfit Plan for Diwali Day?
Pack a small pouch as if you were travelling, even if the celebration is at home. With a full house, the baby's cupboard may be in a room full of guests and shoes.
Puja outfit: a cotton jabla romper.
Photo outfit: the dressy set, for fifteen minutes only.
Evening outfit: a full sleeve zipper romper with footies.
Spare: one extra romper and a vest for the spit up or diaper leak that tends to arrive just as guests do.
Plus: two muslins, a swaddle, diapers and wipes.
Mom tip: Buy the festive piece about two weeks before Diwali, not two months. Babies outgrow sizes fast, and if your baby is near the top of a size range, go one size up. |
If you are unsure about sizing, our practical tips for choosing the right infant clothing walk through sizes, fabrics and how many pieces to buy.
Final Thoughts: Keep Baby's First Diwali Soft and Simple
For most families, a short list is enough: two cotton jablas in festive colours, one full sleeve zipper romper for the evening, a set of muslins, and nothing with sequins near the face. Pick the baby's colour to match mom's outfit and the photos take care of themselves.
