Feeding Dresses: How to Choose One for Home, Office and Festivals

The baby is three weeks old, the paediatrician's appointment is at 11, and the only clean outfit is a dress that opens from the hem.

Feeding dresses are dresses with a built in nursing opening, usually twin zips, a button front or a wrap, so you can breastfeed or pump without lifting the hem or undressing. Picking the right one depends less on the opening and more on where you will wear it: home, office, outings or a family function.

A dress keeps your tummy covered while you feed, because there is no gap at the waist. The catch: you cannot lift a dress, so if the opening is slow or stiff there is no plan B. Length, sitting, pumping and layering all work differently in a dress.

If you want an opening by opening breakdown of zips, buttons, wraps and lift up styles, our nursing tops buying guide covers that in detail, and the same logic applies to dresses. This guide is about the decisions that only come up with a dress, and about what our dress range and nursing friendly styles do and do not stock.

Feeding Dress or Top and Bottoms: Which Works Better?

Neither wins everywhere. A dress wins on coverage and on getting dressed in one move. A nursing top with bottoms wins on flexibility, because you can always lift the top.

Situation Feeding dress Nursing top with bottoms
Tummy cover during a feed Fully covered, the dress is one piece Covered only if you use the opening and do not lift
Getting dressed on four hours of sleep One piece, nothing to match Two pieces to pair
If the opening is stiff or slow No backup, you cannot lift the hem Lift the top instead
Sitting cross legged on the floor Needs a flared or gathered midi skirt Easy in stretch bottoms
Pumping at work Twin zips open both sides at once Same, with the option to lift
Leaks and spit up The whole outfit goes in the wash Change just the top
Family function Dress plus dupatta looks complete Needs a kurta set or co ord to look dressed up

That spit up row is the honest trade off: a dress is the easiest thing to put on and the most annoying thing to change.

Which Feeding Dress Suits Which Occasion?

Most of our feeding dresses sit in our maternity dresses range, because nearly all of them are cut to work over a bump first and for feeds later.

Occasion What to look for Opening that works Typical price in our range
Home and night feeds 100% cotton, soft neckline, side pockets Twin zips or a wrap Rs. 1,599 for cotton zip dresses
Clinic visits and errands Midi length, zips you can find without looking Concealed twin zips Rs. 1,499 to Rs. 1,999
Office Collar or structure, a layer for pumping Twin zips under a button front, or a shacket dress Rs. 1,599 to Rs. 2,599
Festivals and functions A richer fabric, room for a dupatta Twin zips in a silk blend dress, or a kurta set with dupatta Rs. 1,999 for silk foil printed dresses, from Rs. 2,999 for silk kurta sets
Winter Cotton terry or fleece Front zips Rs. 1,299 to Rs. 2,299

Prices are what our site shows at the time of writing.

What we do not stock: true lift up dresses, where an outer layer lifts over an inner opening. The closest is a shacket dress, covered below. Most sizes run S to 3XL.

How Long Should a Feeding Dress Be?

Midi length suits most new mothers, and the reasons are practical rather than about style.

  • Bending and lifting. You pick the baby up many times a day. A knee length dress rides up at the back; a midi stays put.

  • Sitting on the floor. Pujas, a relative's diwan, tummy time on a mat. A gathered or flared skirt lets you sit cross legged and gives the baby a soft lap to lie across. A straight shift dress pulls tight across the thighs.

  • Maxi dresses look lovely at functions, but a long hem and stairs are a tricky mix when both arms hold a baby.

  • Pockets. Side seam pockets hold a burp cloth, a phone or nipple cream, which is why so many of our feeding dresses have two.

For clinic visits and errands, concealed zips are worth learning. The dress reads as a regular dress, and once your fingers know the spot, the zips open as fast as visible ones.

Can You Pump in a Feeding Dress at the Office?

Yes, and twin zips are the reason. A double pump needs both sides open at once, and two vertical zips allow that without touching the rest of the dress. A wrap opens one side at a time, and a button front leaves more of the chest open.

Three things make office pumping easier in a dress:

  1. Zip length. The zip has to open far enough for the pump flange to sit comfortably. Check the product details, and try it with your pump at home before day one.

  2. The right bra. Zips line up best over a clip down feeding bra, so you open the dress, unclip the cup and you are ready. Our post on how a feeding bra makes breastfeeding in public easier explains the clip down style.

  3. A layer on top. In a shared pumping room or a cabin with glass walls, a shacket or shrug over the dress gives you cover and hides any milk marks afterwards.

A button front with hidden zips looks like a regular shirt dress in a meeting.

How to Layer a Feeding Dress: Dupatta, Shacket or Shrug?

A layer adds cover while you feed and lets one dress move from home to office to dinner.

Dupatta

The simplest cover in an Indian wardrobe. Drape it over the feeding shoulder and it falls around the baby; at a family function nobody looks twice. Any dupatta you own works with a zip dress, and our kurta sets with dupatta have nursing zips in the kurta.

Shacket

A shacket dress is a sleeveless inner dress with its own nursing opening, worn under an open overshirt. When you feed, the shacket falls around you like a curtain. It is the closest our range comes to a lift up style, and it doubles as office wear.

Shrug and winter layers

For air conditioned offices and cooler months, we make cotton terry dresses with a full sleeve shrug and a front nursing zip, at Rs. 2,499. In a North Indian winter, a terry hoodie dress with twin front zips is warmer still. Avoid pulling a sweater over a zip dress: you will have to take it off every time you feed. An open cardigan or shrug keeps the zips within reach.

Feeding Dresses for Festivals and Family Functions

Karwa Chauth, Diwali and the wedding season come around in many babies' first year. Plan for three things.

  • Keep the opening at the front. A dress with nursing zips beats a blouse with back hooks or a kurta that only lifts from the hem. Our silk foil printed dresses, such as Aab-e-Siyah, have two nursing zips in a raw silk blend, at Rs. 1,999.

  • Test the zips in the outfit. Heavier fabrics can make a zip feel stiffer than the cotton one you practised in. Open and close it a few times at home with one hand.

  • Plan for spit up. Silk blends are dry clean only. Keep a muslin on your shoulder for burping and a spare dress in the car or bag.

Which Fabric Works Best in Indian Weather?

A feeding baby is a small hot water bottle on your chest, so breathability matters.

  • 100% cotton: most of our feeding dresses. Cool, washable and soft against the baby's cheek.

  • Khadi and cotton flex: a little more structure, so collars and button fronts hold their shape at work.

  • Rayon: drapes beautifully and feels cool, but can cling when you are warm. Several of our wrap dresses use it.

  • Cotton terry and fleece: for winter dresses and hoodie dresses.

  • Raw silk blend: functions only, dry clean only.

How Many Feeding Dresses Do You Need?

Because a dress is changed as a whole, plan a slightly bigger rotation than for tops:

  • Three to four cotton zip or wrap dresses for home. One on, one in the wash, one drying, one spare for a bad spit up day.

  • One concealed zip midi for outings. Clinic visits, errands and short trips.

  • One office option if you return to work within the year, ideally with a shacket or shrug.

  • One festive dress or kurta set if a wedding or festival is coming up.

If you are still pregnant, buying maternity and feeding dresses in the third trimester means you wear them for weeks before delivery and are already stocked when the baby arrives.

Mom tip: Before you cut the tags, sit on the floor, unzip one side with one hand and raise your arms. If the bust pulls when the zip is open, try the next size. A zip that strains across the chest is harder to open and can rub.

When the Problem Is Not the Dress

The right dress makes feeds easier, but it cannot fix pain. If a breast feels hot, swollen or painful, you notice a hard area, or you feel feverish and achy, speak to your gynaecologist or a lactation consultant rather than waiting it out. The NHS page on mastitis lists these symptoms and advises avoiding tight clothing or bras until you feel better, one more reason to keep feeding dresses roomy at the bust.

For the emotional side of the early weeks, our breastfeeding manifesto for new moms is a gentle read.

Final Thoughts: Buy for the First Six Weeks First

The early weeks are mostly the bedroom, the sofa and the paediatrician's clinic, so the dresses that earn their place are soft, washable and easy to open half asleep. Office and festive pieces can wait.

Start with two cotton feeding dresses with twin zips, wear them for a fortnight, then buy for outings and work. For feeding bras, kurta sets and more pieces that open when you need them, browse our nursing friendly styles.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a feeding dress?

A feeding dress is a dress with a built in nursing opening, such as twin zips, a button front or a wrap, so you can breastfeed or pump without lifting the hem or undressing. Many feeding dresses are also maternity dresses, cut with room for a bump, so you can wear them in late pregnancy and keep wearing them after delivery.

Can I wear a feeding dress during pregnancy?

Yes. Most maternity and feeding dresses have a gathered or empire waist that leaves room for the bump, plus nursing zips or a wrap front for later. Buying them in the third trimester gives you weeks of wear before delivery, and you are already stocked for breastfeeding when the baby arrives. Check the bust fit, since it often changes after birth.

How many feeding dresses do I need after delivery?

Plan on three to four soft cotton feeding dresses for home, because leaks and spit up mean the whole dress goes in the wash. Add one concealed zip midi for clinic visits and errands, one office option if you return to work, and one festive dress or kurta set if a function is coming up. Buy more once you know your routine.

Can you pump in a feeding dress?

Yes, and a dress with twin vertical zips is the easiest for pumping, because both sides open at once for a double pump. Wear a clip down feeding bra underneath, check the zip opens far enough for your pump flanges, and practise at home first. A shacket or shrug on top adds cover in a shared pumping room at work.

Is a zip feeding dress better than a wrap dress?

It depends on where you wear it. Twin zips are better for pumping, office wear and outings, because they open quickly and look like a regular dress. A wrap has no hardware, so it feels softer for night feeds at home, but it opens one side at a time. Many new mothers keep one of each and reach for them in different settings.
