The onset of menstruation marks the beginning of a phase in a woman's life – the phase when cares, worries and other essential daily activities come to a halt. They follow one another in an endless cycle for almost half a month every month. It's not uncommon to hear people say that periods are a taboo subject. We all know that women bleed every month, but we don't want to talk about it. When did this become a thing? Why is it that it's difficult for us to talk about periods? Let's change the stigma surrounding periods.

 In fact, even I once thought this way — before I got my first period. At that time I didn't give much consideration to what happens on your monthly menstrual cycle. Like the majority of people, the only thing I had in my mind was the fluid coming out of my vagina and the mess that it'd leave behind if I didn't use sanitary pads.

Sanitary pads: Oh what a role in your life they have played. And will continue to play. You know whether it's a first use or a last use, pads will always be there for you. Always by your side, not one day you'll find yourself saying 'you left me because you'll always see them. In your drawer or in the bathroom or in an ad on TV talking about their new collection...

Do you know that sanitary pads have undergone so many changes over the past years? But despite the advances made in technology, we cannot live without them just like how important they are to our daily lives. Do you ever consider your sanitary pad as a friend? I do. They are there when you need them most, always keeping you comfortable and secure. Whatever the case may be, remember to stay safe, have fun and enjoy!

This taboo is most prevalent in both urban and rural areas. While women are frequently prohibited from washing their hair in temples and kitchens in urban areas, the situation is far worse in small towns and rural areas. Women continue to utilise dry branches, leaves, and other items since there aren't enough period chats, seriously affecting their cleanliness. As we all know, this merely creates more issues, and the only way to solve them is by discussing periods as honestly as possible.

According to research, 60% of females leave school because of their periods. The worrying numbers of female school dropouts in rural areas are due to this same reason.
