Potty training my son was definitely one of those experiences in parenting that was filled with lots of love, a little bit of mess and buckets of patience. A unique journey that, I can say now, with a laugh, will go down in the annals of our family’s history. It had a little of everything: excitement, nervousness, frustration and above all, moments of great learning. In retrospect, though there were tricky bits, the entire process of potty training served to enhance my relationship with my son.

At around the age of two, we initiated this brave mission. Potty training books and online articles made me think that a weekend dedicated to it would be sufficient. Yet, my expectations were rather high. My little explorer was always full of energy and curiosity. Consequently, this mission extended over several weeks, with small wins followed by slight setbacks. What did become clear though, was that every child is unique, and therefore the approach to potty training varies.

I realized that potty training is less of a linear process and more like an elaborate dance between parent and child. You're not just trying to train a behavior but dealing with your child's independence, ability to comprehend and express needs, as well as bodily awareness. In our case, there were some dramatic twists, some unintentional comedy and tears of frustration (both his and mine!).

Rewards and encouragement were key during our potty training phase. I praised him for every little achievement, reinforcing positivity to help him associate the experience with success. We introduced a star chart, where every successful mission to the potty led to a shiny star. It kept the excitement alive and motivation intact.

As with every aspect of parenting, consistency proved crucial. We created a routine, aligning potty times with key events during the day like after a nap, before a bath etc. This regularity ensured that the process didn't seem too overwhelming to my little one.

But honestly, the real star of our journey was the so-called potty chair. The initial fear of this strange, new apparatus was real for my son. To overcome this, we made the potty chair a part of his environment before we officially began training. I let him pick his own chair (we opted for a bright red one!) which helped him to create an attachment to it.

Setbacks and accidents were a given, of course, they made for frustrating moments. However, I understood it was part of the process and just embraced it. In times of relapses, maintaining patience and understanding were key. Reassuring him and reminding myself that he was learning a new, vital life skill kept our spirits high.

The day finally came when we could wave diapers goodbye for good, that feeling of achievement for both of us was immeasurable. In the end, we not only successfully completed the potty training process, but it also turned out to be an important milestone in our bond as mother and son.

I can happily say that Mission Potty Training ended on a triumphant note, filled with messy moments but most importantly, countless giggles and memories. And here's my big take-away – potty training is indeed a milestone for the child but, just as much, it's a major achievement for us parents. It taught me that patience, positivity, consistency, and humor make an unbeatable team in the parenting playbook.
